In a first for local Kent-based developers Chartway Group, and as part of their week-long activities celebrating ‘Women in Construction Week’, female team members joined the ‘Have A Go Day’ to try out a number of different trades.
Traditionally thought of as male roles, the team visited Chartway Construction’s Stones Farm site at Bapchild Sittingbourne to have a go at bricklaying, tiling, plumbing, setting-out and painting & decorating with training given by subcontractors working at the site.
With good weather on their side, two of the team worked with one of the Engineers to learn how homes are plotted using robotic technology to mark out house locations on the ground.
Some members of the team had training on a faux pipe work board before moving inside a house ,to add in and solder plumbing pipework, whilst others learnt the skills of bricklaying by building practice walls, and painting and decorating in an almost finished home.
The ‘Have A Go Day’ was Chartway Group’s first practical day for some of their female workforce, most of whom often visit sites as part their roles but have never been submersed in the physical building of a house.
Joanne Weeden, Sales & Marketing Director at Chartway Group said ‘ We wanted to do something positive in ‘Women in Construction Week’, and this seemed like a great way to get a little bit of inside knowledge from some of the trades who work on our sites. We wanted to show other women that every job on site can be done by anyone regardless of gender, and that although construction is generally male dominated, it’s a great career choice for them too. We all learned a lot on our ‘Have A Go Day’ and the site teams were very welcoming and positive about promoting construction to women, it was such a success that we hope to repeat it again next year’.
