Whilst her Father was doing a conversion, Abbi was already helping him at the age of 13, and was keen to look at a career in construction. After some persuasion, she changed schools in Year 10 and attended Waterfront UTC in Gillingham, to study Level 2 in Engineering and Construction / Level 3 BTEC in Construction and Built Construction, followed by an AS Level, and a BTEC in Engineering Level 2.
After her first job with another developer, Abbi joined Chartway Group in November last year as an Apprentice Trainee Site Supervisor studying for an HNC, a two-year course with a mix of day release at MidKent College and practical everyday experience at the Castle Hill site in Ebbsfleet.
As an Apprentice Trainee Site Supervisor Abbi works along-side Liam, one of Chartway Group’s experienced Project Managers. She is gaining practical experience with site snagging, the CML stage of construction, handling delivery notes, organising site files, predecorating snagging, working on the weekly reporting program and is enjoying engaging with the trades and with one-to-one training.
Abbi said ‘I love working with the Chartway Group team, my Line-Manager Liam, and Site Managers Callum and Jerome, are helping me to achieve the most out of working at the Castle Hill site. My ambition is to eventually become a Project Manager like Liam, he’s great role-model. I already know lots of the Chartway team and enjoy working with them. My family has always encouraged me to chase my dreams, and ever since I drove a digger in the back garden when I was young, my heart has been set on a career in the construction industry.’
The next step in her career is to study a Level 4 HNC in Construction Site Supervision at MidKent College and the University of Greenwich.
Abbi loves working outside even though she says the weather can be challenging at times, but that it’s part of the job! She’s ambitious and sees her next step, once she’s completed her HNC, will be training to be an Assistant Site Manager.
